Service extensions banned during involuntary separation processing

MARADMIN 539/26·October 30, 2026·2 min read·Official source

HQMC just updated MARADMIN 189/26, which set the policy for identifying and involuntarily separating Marines. The change is narrow but significant: the option to extend a Marine's service in order to finish separation proceedings is gone. If a Marine is in the pipeline and reaches their EAS before the process wraps up, they separate on their EAS. Full stop.

Heads up: Commands cannot submit, endorse, or approve any service extension (including NAVMC Form 10274) for the purpose of continuing involuntary separation processing under MARADMIN 189/26.

Who it affects

This applies to the Total Force, including the RC. The most direct impact is on commanders and S-1s managing Marines currently in involuntary administrative separation processing under MARADMIN 189/26. Marines in that pipeline who are approaching their EAS should be aware of where they stand.

What you need to do

If you are a commander or S-1: Stop any pending extension requests tied to separation processing under MARADMIN 189/26. Do not submit, endorse, or approve new ones. Review your current caseload to identify Marines whose EAS falls before their proceedings will conclude.

If you are a Marine in the pipeline: Your EAS date controls. If proceedings are not complete by then, you will separate on your scheduled EAS. Talk to your chain of command and, if needed, contact the appropriate POC below.

For all commands: Continue connecting affected Marines with transition support, mental health resources, and financial counseling throughout the process. Military OneSource is available 24/7 at 1-800-342-9647 or www.militaryonesource.mil.

Key dates

  • Effective immediately (28 October 2026): No new or pending extension requests authorized under MARADMIN 189/26.
