MOS 8157 (Career Detachment Commander) Lateral Move Window Is Open

MARADMIN 529/26·October 28, 2026·2 min read·Official source

This MARADMIN announces an open lateral move (LatMov) opportunity into PMOS 8157, Career Detachment Commander (DetCdr). The 8157 MOS is for SNCOs assigned to the Marine Corps Embassy Security Group (MCESG) who serve as leaders and subject matter experts at U.S. diplomatic posts worldwide, the MSG School, and MCESG staff positions. This one is worth knowing exists, but it does not apply to the Reserve Component.

Heads up: Per paragraph 7, this MARADMIN applies to the Active Component only. Reservists have no action here.

Who it affects

Active component GySgts only, specifically those currently serving as DetCdrs with MCESG or other active duty SNCOs who may be eligible for a lateral move into 8157. Staff Sergeants who are select grade for GySgt in their current PMOS may also apply.

Reserve Marines (SMCR, IMA, IRR) are explicitly excluded.

What you need to do

Nothing. This MARADMIN does not apply to the RC. If you are an active duty Marine currently drilling with a reserve unit in some capacity and believe you may be eligible, contact the 8157 Monitor directly for guidance.

For active duty readers who are eligible, the process depends on whether you are already serving as a DetCdr:

If you are currently a DetCdr:

  1. Submit MCESG Form 8157/1 to notify your Region Command of your intent to apply.
  2. Your Region Commander endorses the request and forwards it with the form to MCESG Commander at 8157PMOS@groups.state.gov.
  3. You will be directed to submit a Reenlistment, Extension, Lateral Move (RELM) request through TFRS via your Region Career Counselor.
  4. The request routes through MCESG chain of command to MMEA for review by your current PMOS Monitor, then the 8157 Monitor.
  5. MCESG HQ coordinates any follow-on interview requirements.
  6. If approved, MMEA-1 reports your PMOS as 8157.

If you are not currently serving as an MSG:

  1. Contact your unit Career Counselor to initiate a LatMov request through your chain of command and current PMOS Monitor at MMEA.
  2. Once MMEA makes an initial decision, the 8157 Monitor is notified via TFRS.
  3. You will be scheduled for a virtual interview with the MCESG Screening and Selection Board.
  4. Within five working days of the interview, MCESG sends a formal decision letter, which is included in your LatMov package for MMEA's final review.
  5. If approved, MMEA-1 assigns your Intended MOS. You remain at your parent command until orders to MSG DetCdr School are issued.
  6. PMOS 8157 is awarded upon completion of MSG DetCdr School.

Key dates

No deadline is published in this MARADMIN. Contact the 8157 Monitor for current application windows.
