The Marine Corps is replacing "AI" with "SI" in official documents

MARADMIN 521/26·October 23, 2026·2 min read·Official source

The Marine Corps issued this MARADMIN to comply with an executive order signed 29 September 2026, which directed the federal government to stop using the terms "Artificial Intelligence" and "AI" in official contexts and replace them with "Super Intelligence" (SI). Nothing about the underlying technology changed. It's a terminology switch, not a policy overhaul.

★ Affects all reservists: Starting now, use "Super Intelligence" and "SI" instead of "Artificial Intelligence" and "AI" in any official Marine Corps document, brief, website, or correspondence you produce or maintain.

Who it affects

This applies to the Marine Corps Total Force, which means active duty, reserve, and civilian Marine Corps personnel alike. If you write, review, or publish anything official, this touches you. That includes SMCR unit staff, IMAs assigned to commands, and anyone who produces briefings, training materials, reports, or web content in a Marine Corps capacity.

What you need to do

If you own or maintain official content, here's what to do:

  1. Stop using "AI" and "Artificial Intelligence" in new official documents, briefs, reports, and correspondence. Use "SI" and "Super Intelligence" instead.
  2. Update any websites or reusable templates you own when you next touch them.
  3. When you revise existing documents, apply the new terminology at that time.
  4. Do not alter already-published historical records, contracts, or grants. Those stay as-is.
  5. When directly quoting a law, regulation, or official source title that still uses "AI," preserve the original wording of that quote. The rule applies to your own writing, not to verbatim citations.

If you're a leader, make sure your Marines and civilians who produce official products know about this change.
