MOS 6053 (CH-53K Maintenance Specialist) requirements updated for FY27

MARADMIN 518/26·October 22, 2026·2 min read·Official source

The Marine Corps updated the FY27 MOS Manual out of cycle to change how NMOS 6053, CH-53K Maintenance Specialist, is earned. OJT is no longer an approved pathway. Going forward, Marines must complete a formal transition course or the final course of a CH-53K initial accession pipeline. The change is effective now and supports the service-wide transition from the CH-53E to the CH-53K.

Heads up: OJT no longer qualifies you for NMOS 6053. You need a completed transition or initial accession course on record.

Who it affects

Marines in primary MOS 6113, 6153, 6173, or 6323 who are assigned to or transitioning to CH-53K platforms. This is a total force message, so it covers active component and reserve Marines alike. If you hold or are working toward NMOS 6053 at a CH-53K squadron, this applies to you.

What you need to do

If you are currently pursuing NMOS 6053, confirm you are enrolled in or have completed the correct formal course for your primary MOS. OJT alone will not get you there anymore. Talk to your unit training officer or S-1 if your pathway was OJT-based.

The required courses by primary MOS are:

Primary MOSCourseCourse Code
6113 and 6173 (transition)CH-53K Mechanic Organizational Maintenance CourseM05P4I1
6323 (transition)CH-53K Avionics Technician Organizational Maintenance CourseM05P401
6153 (transition)CH-53K Airframe Mechanic Organizational Maintenance CourseM05P491
6113 (initial accession)CH-53K Initial Accession Mechanic Pipeline CourseM05P591
6173 (initial accession)CH-53K Marine Enlisted Aircrew Training CourseM0553E4
6323 (initial accession)CH-53K Initial Accession Avionics Pipeline CourseM05P571
6153 (initial accession)CH-53K Initial Accession Airframe Mechanic Pipeline CourseM05P581

Training coordinated and approved by DCA and DC T&E (Training and Education Command) can also qualify, but that is a command-level coordination, not something an individual Marine arranges on their own.

Key dates

  • Effective immediately (MARADMIN published 22 Oct 26)
  • This change will be formally incorporated into the FY28 MOS Manual; it is applied to FY27 by exception
