FY27 Active Reserve Officer Accession and Career Designation Plan Is Open

MARADMIN 473/26·October 5, 2026·3 min read·Official source

The Marine Corps has released the FY27 Active Reserve (AR) Officer Accession and Career Designation plan. This is the annual roadmap for reserve (and active component) officers who want to serve full-time in the AR Program, supporting the Reserve component as an integrated part of the Total Force. Two entry paths exist: a formal Officer Accession Board (OAB) in January 2027, and a rolling Direct Hire Process (DHP) open right now.

Bottom line: If you want to join the AR Program in FY27, the DHP is open today, and the OAB application window opens 1 December 2026.

Who it affects

Officers in the SMCR, IMA, IRR, or on AR Limited Tours who want to transition to full-time AR service. AC officers can also apply but have a more involved process (reserve commission, conditional release, and AR accession approval, all conditional on each other).

Grade and time-in-grade (TIG) eligibility breaks down like this:

CommunityEligible GradesTIG Restriction
Ground OfficersO-2, O-3None
Ground OfficersO-4Less than 2 years TIG at application
Aviators (75XX)O-3 through O-5None

A few other eligibility notes:

  • Officers with bonuses, continuation pay, or other incentive pay should review recoupment risk before applying. Per MARADMIN 003/26, continuation pay recipients may owe money back upon accession.
  • Reserve Officer Commissioning Program (ROCP) officers in their initial mandatory service obligation can apply if they are within one year of their Mandatory Drill Participation Stop Date.
  • Officers who do not meet eligibility criteria can request a waiver in their application.

What you need to do

There are two paths. Pick the one that fits.

Path 1: Officer Accession Board (OAB)

  1. Download the application template from the AR Assignments (RAM-2) tab at https://www.manpower.marines.mil/Divisions/Reserve-Affairs-Division/Reserve-Affairs-Management-RAM/ (look under "Active Reserve Officer Accessions").
  2. Prepare your package per the template, including all required endorsements and enclosures.
  3. Submit through the Manpower & Reserve Affairs application website at www2.manpower.usmc.mil/application_cac/ between 1 December 2026 and 15 January 2027.
  4. Board results for primary selectees will be published via MARADMIN. Alternates are notified separately.

Path 2: Direct Hire Process (DHP)

  1. Contact the appropriate AR monitor before submitting. They can tell you whether a rank and MOS match billet is actually available.
  2. If a match looks viable, submit via NAVMC 10274 Administrative Action (AA) Form addressed to CMC (RAM-2), sent directly to the POC listed below.
  3. Your application gets one of three outcomes: Approved (billet match exists), Deferred (you qualify but no billet right now), or Declined (no current fit). A declined or deferred result does not close the door on future boards or DHP cycles.

AC officers have an added layer: you need a reserve commission (up to 120 days to process), an Intra-Service Transfer with a DD-368 conditional release, and AR accession approval. All three are conditional on each other. Start early and loop in MMOA and MMSR as soon as you have intent to apply.

Career Designation (CD): If you are already in the AR Program on an accession tour in Component Code B1, you will be screened for CD after 24 months of your tour. RAM-2 will contact eligible officers separately with details.
