The Marine Corps has published updated policy for the FY27 Direct Affiliation Program (DAP). DAP lets qualified AC Marines affiliate directly with an SMCR unit or IMA detachment at EAS, with no gap in service. The program is now managed by Reserve Affairs Careers (RAC-3), not MMEA. This MARADMIN cancels and replaces all previous DAP guidance.
Bottom line: If you're leaving active duty and want to go straight into the reserves, DAP is your path. Miss the window or fail to check in within 30 days of EAS and you lose the benefits.
Who it affects
AC Marines planning to separate who want to affiliate directly with the SMCR or an IMA detachment. Retiring Marines and Marines already serving in the RC are not eligible. Officers who have not started the Reserve commissioning process need to do that separately and immediately.
What you need to do
If you're an active-duty Marine approaching EAS:
- Contact your unit Career Counselor. They help you identify available SMCR and IMA billets, walk through incentive options, and submit your DAP request.
- Submit your DAP request inside the correct window (see Key Dates below).
- If you're overseas or going on terminal leave, submit at least 90 days before EAS.
- After EAS, check into your gaining SMCR unit or IMA detachment within 30 calendar days. Missing that check-in can result in a transfer to the IRR and loss of all DAP benefits and incentives.
If you're an officer: The DAP request and the Reserve commissioning process are separate tracks. The commissioning process normally takes a minimum of four months from receipt at HQMC. If you haven't started it yet, contact the Reserve commissioning authority now.
If you're a unit SNCO or S-1: Gaining SMCR units must accept DAP-approved Marines. You cannot add local screening, interviews, or boards to the process. If a Marine fails to report, you can transfer them directly to the IRR. Include a history statement in the diary entry explaining the no-show.
If your DAP request is disapproved or closed: Contact your local Prior Service Recruiter or call 1-800-MARINES for affiliation options through traditional channels.
