The Marine Corps published new guidance on the SMCR Retention and Affiliation Bonus program on 19 August 2026. The program has three bonuses: the Reserve Affiliation Bonus (RAB), the Selective Retention Bonus Reserve (SRB-R), and the Reserve Transfer Bonus (RTB). The combined maximum payout, including a unit kicker, is $40,000. This MARADMIN is effective immediately and stays in place until superseded.

Bottom line: If you're an enlisted Marine (Cpl through MSgt) in an eligible MOS, there's money on the table to join or stay in the SMCR, and the amounts run from $5,000 to $40,000 depending on what you commit to.

Who it affects

Corporals through master sergeants in specific MOSs. Eligible populations are:

  • RAB: AC Marines within one year of EAS, and current IMA or IRR Marines, with less than 20 years of total military service.
  • SRB-R: Current SMCR Marines with an expired or expiring Mandatory Drill Participation Stop Date (MDPSD). MSgts must have less than 24 years of service. GySgts and SSgts must have less than 18 satisfactory years.
  • RTB: AC Marines within one year of EAS with fewer than 15 years of active service. Cannot be combined with the RAB or a unit kicker.

Additional eligibility walls that apply across the board:

  • Must hold a grade of Cpl, Sgt, SSgt, GySgt, or MSgt.
  • Must be assignable to a BIC that matches your grade and MOS on the unit's Table of Organization.
  • Marines who failed a promotion board or were reduced in rank are ineligible.
  • Marines who received NJP within the past 12 months are ineligible.
  • Marines who previously received an affiliation bonus to join the SMCR from AC, IMA, or IRR cannot receive another affiliation bonus.
  • Marines with an existing bonus obligation cannot apply for a new one until within 90 days of completing their current obligation (SRB-R).

What you need to do

If you think you're eligible, here's how to approach it:

  1. Confirm your MOS is on the eligible list in paragraphs 5.g. or 5.h. of the MARADMIN.
  2. Identify which bonus applies to your situation (RAB, SRB-R, or RTB).
  3. Determine whether your unit or a nearby unit qualifies for a unit kicker (see paragraph 5.m. and 5.n. of the MARADMIN).
  4. Ensure you have sufficient Reserve End of Current Contract (RECC) time, or plan a reenlistment or extension to cover the obligation.
  5. Submit your request through your unit and S-1. Contact the POCs below with questions.

Primary POCs:

  • Bonus program general: SMB_RAP@USMC.MIL
  • Retention questions: SMB_RA_RETENTION@USMC.MIL

Key dates

  • Effective: 19 August 2026 (date of publication)
  • No stated expiration date. The program remains in effect until a new MARADMIN supersedes it.
  • Obligation start date is the latest of: bonus acceptance date, SMCR affiliation date, MDPSD completion, or MOS retraining completion.
