The Marine Corps just tightened up the rules for IMA tour extensions. The standard tour is still three years, but extensions beyond that now require formal command endorsement, signed paperwork routed through the right channels, and justification tied to actual mission requirements. Extensions are no longer a routine administrative checkbox.

Heads up: If you're an IMA closing in on your three-year mark, your Operational Sponsor needs to initiate any extension request in RTAMMS no earlier than 90 days out and no later than 15 days before your end of tour.

Who it affects

All IMAs, with limited exceptions for those covered by an approved Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) or separate agreement (for example, IMA judge advocates under the Reserve Legal Support construct). Commands managing IMA billets are also directly affected by the billet advertising and turnover requirements.

What you need to do

If you're an IMA approaching end of tour:

  1. Talk to your Operational Sponsor well before your three-year mark. They initiate the extension request in RTAMMS; you don't submit it yourself.
  2. If you're requesting a fourth year, your command needs a signed endorsement from a battalion or squadron CO (or an O-6 or above if no CO is reasonably available). That authority cannot be delegated.
  3. If you're requesting a fifth year, a General Officer or Senior Executive Service (SES) official in your operational chain of command must endorse it. Again, cannot be delegated. The endorsement must specifically address mission necessity, lack of a suitable replacement, and the readiness impact if denied.
  4. The signed endorsement goes to SMB_IMA@USMC.MIL. RTAMMS processing happens after Reserve Affairs (RA) reviews it for compliance.

If you're a command managing IMA billets:

  • Advertise billets in the Inventory Development and Management System (IDMS) module within RTAMMS before a Marine's tour ends. Don't wait until the last minute and then request an extension because there's no replacement. That's exactly what this policy is designed to prevent.
  • Treat extensions as exceptions that require real justification, not paperwork to rubber-stamp.

Key dates

  • Extension submission window: No earlier than 90 days before end of tour; no later than 15 days before end of tour.
  • Effective date: Immediately (released 28 July 2026).
