The Marine Corps announced the FY28 Limited Duty Officer (LDO) promotion selection boards for Major and Lieutenant Colonel. Both boards convene 25 August 2026 at Quantico. If you're an LDO captain or major, your window to get your record squared away and submit correspondence closes 14 August.
Bottom line: Board correspondence is due 14 August 2026. Your OMPF and MBS need to be accurate before that date. This is on you.
Who it affects
Active component LDO captains and majors in the following MOSs:
Major board (Capt to Maj): 0430, 0605, 1705, 2102, 2305, 2340, 2802, 3102, 3302, 5502, 5902, 6004, 6302, 6502. No board for MOS 6802.
Lieutenant Colonel board (Maj to LtCol): 0430, 0605, 2102, 2305, 2340, 2802, 3102, 3302, 5902, 6004, 6302, 6502. No board for MOSs 1705, 5502, or 6802.
Each board considers AZ, IZ, and BZ officers by MOS. The MARADMIN lists the senior and junior IZ officers and the BZ boundary by name and lineal control number (LCN) for each MOS. Check where you fall relative to those names to know your zone.
Officers with an established separation or retirement date before the board convenes will not be considered. Captains who are not U.S. citizens are not eligible for promotion to major.
What you need to do
- Check your zone. Review MCBUL 1400, Officer Lineal Precedence (Ref B) and the officer promotion homepage to confirm your eligibility and zone.
- Audit your OMPF and MBS. Every officer is personally responsible for accuracy. Review fitness reports and ensure everything is complete before the board convenes. Guidance on how to do this is in MARADMIN 622/25 (Ref A).
- Submit correspondence (optional but allowed). Any eligible officer may write to the President of the Board. Instructions, due dates, and submission options are in paragraph 8 of MARADMIN 622/25.
- Address body composition. The Digital Boardroom will pull previous height and weight data. If you want your current Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) in front of the board, you may (this is optional) submit WHtR documentation signed by your Command Physical Training Representative as an enclosure to your board letter. The WHtR requirement for all Marines was due by 30 June 2026.
Continuation boards will follow immediately after the promotion boards. If you're selected for promotion but would otherwise face involuntary retirement before completing three years in the new grade, you may be considered for continuation. Contact CMC (Manpower Management Separations and Retirement, or MMSR) to verify your eligibility for that track.
