Active-duty enlisted early-out program opens a recruiting window for SMCR units

The Marine Corps activated the FY26 Voluntary Enlisted Early Release Program (VEERP) on 1 July 2026. Active-duty first-term enlisted Marines whose EAS falls on or before 30 September 2026 can now apply to separate early. This MARADMIN is explicit: VEERP does not apply to the Reserve component. What it does do is name the SMCR by name as a place separating Marines should consider landing.

Heads up: VEERP is an active-duty program, but it's a direct recruiting opportunity for SMCR units, and it's happening right now.

Who it affects

This MARADMIN does not change anything for current reservists. No action is required from SMCR, IMA, or IRR Marines in their reserve capacity.

The relevant piece for the Reserve is paragraph 9: HQMC specifically calls out the SMCR Direct Affiliation Program as the structured pathway for active-duty Marines separating under VEERP who want to stay affiliated. If your unit has billets to fill, the pool of potential candidates just grew.

What you need to do

If you are a reservist with no active-duty affiliation: Nothing to do. This doesn't affect your status, pay, or obligations.

If you are a recruiter, career planner, or SMCR unit leader: This is your cue. Marines separating under VEERP are considered to have completed their full active service commitment. They are transition-eligible, many are still under MSO (Military Service Obligation), and HQMC is actively pointing them toward the SMCR. Make contact with nearby active-duty career counselors now, before September.

If you are an active-duty Marine reading this through Reservable: Talk to your Career Counselor. Your IRR obligation from your enlistment contract is not waived by VEERP, but you may be able to fulfill it through the SMCR instead.
