Enlisted Marines Can Now Apply for a Free Master's Degree at NPS

The Marine Corps just announced the FY27 Marine Corps Graduate Education Program, Enlisted (MCGEP-E), a pilot program that sends selected active-duty enlisted Marines to Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) for a fully funded master's degree. The program is tied to five specific curricula and leads to directed HQMC assignments afterward. Applications are due July 26, 2026, and the selection board convenes August 4, 2026.

Heads up: This program is explicitly not applicable to the Marine Corps Reserve. If you're SMCR, IMA, or IRR, this one isn't for you unless you go active.

Who it affects

Active-duty enlisted Marines only. The MARADMIN states directly that it does not apply to the Marine Corps Reserve. If you're in the SMCR, IMA, or IRR, this is an awareness item, not an action item.

For active-duty Marines, eligibility is tightly defined:

  • E6 and E7 with no more than 16 years of service by degree completion
  • E5 may apply with at least 24 months time in grade (grade waiver required)
  • E8 and E9 are not eligible
  • Marines passed for promotion to the next grade are not eligible
  • Must hold a baccalaureate degree
  • Must have 24 months time on station before the June 2027 NPS report date
  • Must not be stabilized for deployment or already have orders
  • PME complete for current rank before executing orders
  • Must meet reenlistment requirements and be willing to obligate enough service to cover the program plus 48 months post-graduation

What you need to do

Nothing, if you're a reservist. File this under awareness. If you're currently active or know an active-duty Marine who might qualify, pass it along.

For active-duty applicants, there are two parallel application tracks: one to NPS and one through TFRS to HQMC (MMEA-25). Both are due July 26, 2026.
