The Communication Directorate New York (CDNY) is running its annual Commanders' Media Training Symposium in New York City from 15-18 September 2026. It's a four-day program giving board-selected commanding officers direct access to major news organizations and one-on-one interview coaching. The focus is practical: understanding the modern media environment and how it affects the Marine Corps.

Heads up: Registration closes 7 August 2026. If spots are oversubscribed, priority goes to those who assumed command earliest, and to those who have never attended before.

Who it affects

Current O-5 and O-6 commanders, or officers already selected for command. XOs can attend only if the commander cannot. First-timers get priority when seats are limited. This is not a general-attendance event.

What you need to do

  1. Submit your registration request no later than 7 August 2026 using the online form at https://forms.osi.apps.mil/r/eNiwA4nRyW.
  2. CDNY will notify approved attendees no later than 17 August 2026.
  3. Once selected, coordinate travel through your parent command. Your command funds all travel costs. Use your Government Travel Charge Card. No on-site disbursing or transportation support is available.
  4. Book your own billeting in Manhattan. CDNY will send a Welcome Packet with recommended hotels after selection.
  5. Review all read-ahead material before arrival and coordinate with your unit's Communication Strategy and Operations Officer (COMMSTRAT officer) beforehand.

A few logistics worth noting:

  • Uniform: Service Charlies with Garrison Cap for official portions. Business casual (blazer and slacks, tie optional for men; dress, skirt, or slacks with dress shirt for women) for other events.
  • Transportation: Skip the rental car. CDNY explicitly discourages it. Use public transit.
  • Training hours: 0900 on 15 September through 1700 on 18 September. Training location provided after selection.

Key dates

  • 7 August 2026: Registration deadline
  • 17 August 2026: CDNY notifies approved attendees
  • 15-18 September 2026: Symposium (New York City)
