The Marine Corps has announced the FY27 selection board for NROTC duty, covering Professor of Naval Science (PNS), Executive Officer (XO), and Marine Officer Instructor (MOI) billets. Positions start summer 2027 at universities across the country. This is open to active duty unrestricted officers only. If that's you and NROTC duty is on your radar, the application deadline is coming up fast.
Bottom line: Applications are due to MMOA-3 by 2359 ET on 11 June 2026. Miss that window and you're out for this cycle.
Who it affects
Active duty unrestricted officers only. Reserve Marines are not eligible for these billets. Specific grade requirements by billet:
- PNS: Colonels or Selected Colonels (CY25/FY27 board) who will satisfy their Tour Control Factor by 30 September 2027.
- XO: Majors
- MOI: Captains
Officers must also complete their current prescribed tour NLT 30 September 2027, or request approval to screen early (with chain-of-command endorsement).
You are not eligible if you:
- Were selected Colonel on the CY26/FY28 board
- Have an approved or mandatory separation/retirement date before 30 July 2030
- Have previously declined command or career designation
- Are already in receipt of FY27 orders
- Are enrolled in the PHD-S or PHD-T programs and won't be dissertation-complete by 30 June 2027
- Are a limited duty officer
What you need to do
If you're eligible and interested, here's what the application requires:
- Get concurrence from your PMOS monitor. That correspondence goes in the package.
- Prepare a single PDF named exactly:
EDIPI_LASTNAME_SUM27NROTC_DOC1.pdf(must be under 800KB). - Include all five documents in that PDF:
- Personal statement (one page, standard naval letter format, addressed to MMOA-3)
- Command endorsement (standard naval letter from your immediate chain)
- One to three letters of recommendation
- Official college transcripts (also upload to your OMPF before the deadline)
- PMOS monitor concurrence or non-concurrence letter
- Email the package to
SMB_MMOA_PLANSO@USMC.MIL. - Complete the assignment questionnaire at
https://forms.osi.apps.mil/r/FLkKDD6aUfand upload your documents there as well.
Academic minimums: Bachelor's degree with a 3.0 GPA (some schools accept 2.5 for strong records). Some PNS billets require a master's degree or proof of enrollment/acceptance in a graduate program.
Physical fitness: High first-class PFT and CFT are recommended, not just passing scores.
On body composition: The board has transitioned to Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) under MARADMIN 066/26. The Digital Boardroom can't pull current WHtR data automatically, so the board won't hold a missing measurement against you. If you want your current WHtR on record, update your official photo in your OMPF per MARADMIN 127/26.
If you apply and get selected: You're volunteering to go wherever MMOA assigns you. Declination requests after selection are not normally approved. MOI selectees who haven't screened for career designation (CD) will be offered CD with their selection. If you decline that CD offer, your MOI selection is nullified and you'll execute your EAS.
