HQMC has put out a new mandatory policy on GPS encryption. The old MARADMIN covering this (566/18) expired, so this replaces and updates it. The bottom line: if your unit has a DAGR or any other device with SAASM built in, it must be loaded with current crypto keys and operated in encrypted mode, every time, effective immediately.
★ Affects all reservists: Any SMCR or IMA unit that owns, uses, or maintains a DAGR, AN/PRC-117G, AN/PRC-163, Tactical Handoff System (THS), or Common Laser Range Finder Integrated Capability (CLRF-IC) must run SAASM encryption during all training and operations, starting now.
Who it affects
This is a total force policy. It hits every Marine Corps unit that possesses, operates, or maintains SAASM-based user equipment (SAASM UE). That includes reserve units. If your S6 or fires section has any of these devices in the armory or on the property book, this applies to you:
- AN/PSN-13 DAGR
- AN/PRC-117G or AN/PRC-163 tactical radios
- Tactical Handoff System (THS)
- CLRF-IC
What you need to do
The responsibilities break down by role:
Unit COMSEC account managers: Ensure current SAASM crypto keys are on hand for any SAASM UE in your command or subordinate commands. As of publication, the current keys include BKAUPD, BGUV, and BCVM. Verify keys are loaded and devices are in encrypted mode before any employment.
MSC COMSEC account managers: Coordinate key issuance down to subordinate units to cover all training and real-world operations.
S6 and fires control elements: Confirm SAASM encryption is active on every eligible device in your section.
All units: If a DAGR gets a software upgrade, plan to re-key it immediately after. The reprogramming process wipes crypto keys, so do not assume a freshly updated device is ready to go without reloading.
Annual Key Management Infrastructure (KMI) inspections will verify keying material is available. Commanding General Readiness Inspection (CGRI) teams will check SAASM key issuance logs. This is being inspected, not just requested.
