The Marine Corps Fleet Band Program is running its FY2026 PMOS Selection Board for three music specialty billets. This is the process that moves qualified 55XX SNCOs into leadership and technical roles across the Fleet Marine Band Program. If you're in the 55XX occupational field and looking to pick up one of these PMOSs, the window is open now.

Bottom line: Applications for the 5521, 5522, and 5523 PMOS board are due 30 March 2026. Miss the deadline and you wait another year.

Who it affects

55XX-field SNCOs pursuing a leadership or specialist PMOS. Specifically, Marines competing for:

  • 5521 Ensemble Leader (Drum Major or Enlisted Conductor)
  • 5522 Production Manager
  • 5523 Instrument Repair Technician

This is a niche board. If you're not in the 55XX field, this doesn't touch you.

What you need to do

Every application requires a letter of recommendation from a Band Officer (PMOS 5502) or Enlisted Bandleader (PMOS 5519). Applicants for 5522 and 5523 also need an additional letter from a current Production Manager (5522) or Instrument Repair Technician (5523) in the field they're applying for. Both letters must specifically address your ability to meet the technical and leadership requirements in the MOS Manual and Music Training and Readiness Manual.

Beyond the common requirements, each PMOS has its own submission:

5521 Enlisted Conductor:

  1. Video conducting the U.S. National Anthem and the Japanese National Anthem ("Kimigayo") from the podium with a baton, plus one piece of your choice (march or concert piece, five minutes or less). All videos except "Kimigayo" must be from an actual ceremony. Camera focus must stay on the ensemble leader.
  2. Board data sheet covering your conducting repertoire and ceremonial unit leader experience.

5521 Drum Major:

  1. Video conducting the U.S. National Anthem and "Kimigayo" from the podium with a baton, plus a separate video of you drum majoring a band through a Pass in Review ceremony. Same rules: all except "Kimigayo" from an actual ceremony, camera on the ensemble leader.
  2. Board data sheet covering drum major and ceremonial unit leader experience.

5522 Production Manager:

  1. Three audio production projects, one per category, five minutes or less each:
    • Category 1: Traditional acoustic recording (live performance in a natural acoustic environment)
    • Category 2: Traditional studio recording (multitrack, microphone and studio technique)
    • Category 3: Modern studio recording (mixing, programming, sampling, effects)
  2. Full category descriptions will come via separate correspondence.

5523 Instrument Repair Technician:

  1. Board data sheet listing your instrument repair experience relevant to the position.
